5 Players Who Have Scored the Most Number of Own Goals in Premier League History

Defenders already have the tough task of keeping out the opposition strikers and help their goalkeeper keep a clean sheet. Even a small mistake could mean that the team concedes a goal.

Under such pressure, some players have the added misfortune of scoring against their own teams while trying to avert imminent danger.

Here are the five players who have scored the most own goals in the Premier League.

5. Phil Jagielka - 6 Goals

Phil Jagielka has been at Everton for more than 10 years and prior to that, played for Sheffield United for nearly a decade.

Jagielka's loyalties are unquestionable but it is his misfortune that he has managed to put the ball past his own goalkeeper on six occasions in the Premier League.

Known for his strong tackling, aerial prowess and ability to make crucial interceptions, the centre-back has had to suffer the consequences of having scored multiple own goals.

4. Wes Brown - 6 Goals

Another player who has had the misfortune of having scored six goals past his own goalkeeper is Wes Brown. The player spent 15 years with Manchester United and even won the Champions League title twice with them, along with multiple Premier League titles.

As a defender, he showed his versatility by playing both centre-back and right-back. Despite that, he is one of the top five players who have managed to outfox their own goalkeepers.

3. Martin Skrtel - 7 Goals

Martin Skrtel was at Liverpool for nearly a decade and is currently plying his trade for Fenerbahce.

Skrtel was an integral part of the Reds side that came close to winning the Premier League, but was also guilty of scoring seven goals against his own goalkeeper over the years.

His intensity and ability to give it all are unmatched and though he was a fan favourite, the Slovakian did suffer the fate of scoring past his own goalkeeper seven times.

2. Jamie Carragher - 7 Goals

Jamie Carragher is a Liverpool legend who was notorious for scoring own goals during his playing career.

Carragher had spent his entire career, spanning close to two decades, at the Merseyside club and won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. But, he also scored seven goals against his own team, just like teammate Skrtel.

His most infamous contribution were two own goals against Manchester United in what is one of the most intense rivalries.

1. Richard Dunne - 10 Goals

Richard Dunne played for such steady Premier League sides such as Everton and Manchester City, winning the Championship with the latter and the League Cup with the former.

He also managed to score as many as 10 own goals in his career, the most by a player in the Premier League and was very good at attacking the ball inside the box.
