Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has claimed that new signing Philippe Coutinho is more of an attacking player than club captain Andres Iniesta but he insisted that the duo can play together in the team.

After a protracted transfer saga, the Catalan side signed Coutinho from Liverpool for 160 million and the Brazilian made his debut in the recent win over Espanyol, coming on as a substitute for Iniesta in the second half.

Speaking ahead of tonight's tie against Deportivo Alaves, Valverde stated that Coutinho has more attacking tendencies than Iniesta and suggested that the 25-year-old could make his first start for the club.

As reported by Sport, Valverde said, "Coutinho has to get used to what his teammates have been doing this season. He will have defensive duties, of course, even though he has more of an attacking profile than Iniesta. They're different players, but they can complement each other perfectly on the pitch."

He continued, "Iniesta's more of a midfielder. Coutinho is more offensive, he takes on shots from distance and he can play wide or through the middle... but he also has to conform to what we do."

On being asked whether Coutinho could start tonight's match, Valverde added, "Coutinho could start [against Alaves], yes. He came through his debut the other day, so he's available. We will see..."

Barcelona currently lie top of the La Liga standings and will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the league tonight against Alaves who lie 17th in the league table.
