Former Manchester City captain and defender Richard Dunne has claimed that the club can end up winning 20 league titles similar to their neighbours, revealing that another FA Cup win would help them to get going.

City have won five league titles in their history, with three coming in this decade itself, and with a one point lead over Liverpool they are poised to win the Premier League trophy this year as well.

Dunne believes that winning a number of domestic titles will help them become one of the best clubs in the world, and they could become similar to Manchester United in popularity.

According to Goal, he said, “I think any team that retains the Premier League is instantly up there, because it is such a difficult trophy to hold onto,” he told Goal. “But to be able to do that and clean up domestically adds another level to it.

“I think that’s the aim, I think they want to dominate for the next four or five, maybe 10 years, try to win as many as they can and make sure that this isn’t a short-term thing for Man City.

“They want to be a historically big club like Man United, like Liverpool, and to do that it takes time. But I think over the next period, as long as Guardiola is there, they will be looking to win every trophy they can domestically to get that honours list up higher and get them competing maybe more towards 20 Premier League titles.”

It remains to be seen if City can sustain this success, but for now, they will be aiming for the quadruple this season, having already won the League Cup.
