Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has praised the performance of Philippe Coutinho during their 5-1 win over Lyon in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, revealing that he is excited for the player’s future with the club.

Coutinho has had a slow season, unable to reach the heights from his time at Liverpool since his move to Barcelona in last season’s January transfer window. He has been dropped to the bench a number of times during the season, with even the club president criticizing his performances.

However, Valverde has always been a fan of the Brazilian even though he did not always start him in games, and was happy with the player’s performance on the night.

"It was an important game for him [Coutinho] as it was for everyone, our club and our team," Valverde said, according to Goal.

"I think he had a great game. It is true maybe this year he's had some not great matches, but in some specific times he did well, he scored two goals against Sevilla. So, we expect him to get more confidence in order to give us his best. We are happy for him."

There have been rumours that Coutinho could be making a move out of the club in the summer, with the club hierarchy willing to let him go as he has been deemed a failure. It remains to be seen if that is indeed the case or if he will remain at the club at least until Valverde remains the manager at Barcelona.
