Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has admitted that his side deserved to lose to Liverpool in their round of 16 second leg of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, claiming that, "his opponents we're the better side over the two games."

The Reds thrashed Bayern 3-1 in the second leg at the Allianz Arena to condemn the German giants to their earliest exit at the European stage since 2010-11 and Kovac while disappointed had no reason to complain.

"We had a strong opponent and we have to congratulate Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. They were better in these two matches and we deserved to lose. The opponent attacked us very high and left no spaces, that made it difficult for us," he said as quoted by Goal.

"On top of that it was not our best day. Liverpool are a top team in Europe and they showed us our limits. You saw after the second goal how much quality they have."

Despite the loss, Bayern are still in contention for two titles domestically and have had a resurgence of form in the Bundesliga where they have fought back to reclaim their place at the top of the table and are above challengers Borussia Dortmund on goal difference.
