French football legend Michel Platini has claimed that there should be only once choice when it comes to who should get the Ballon d'Or award, and that should be central defender Raphael Varane, simply because the Frenchman won everything last season.

Varane was part of the France squad that won the World Cup in Russia and he was also part of the Real Madrid team that won the UEFA Champions League title for the fourth time in five seasons.

Platini believes none of the other contenders like Luka Modric, Lionel Messi or Kylian Mbappe even come close to Varane's achievements last season.

“There has never been an easier decision on who should win the Ballon d’Or,” said Platini on France’s RMC radio, according to AS.

He continued, “There is only one player that has won the European Cup and World Cup (…) Normally there is a debate between Ronaldo or Messi, Messi or Ronaldo, but this year only one player has won all that. His name is Varane, and besides that, he is an excellent player… very, very good.”

The 63-year-old then specified as to why he feels Varane deserves the Ballon d'Or as he said, “Results are the only the objective factor. You can have your opinions about Griezmann, Mbappé…but the only one that has won it all, the two most important competitions, is Raphael Varane.”

25-year-old Varane is one of the 30 candidates who have been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or award but is unlikely to win the honour. Luka Modric, who won FIFA's 'The Best' award, is the front-runner, and will most likely end up winning the Ballon d'Or too.
