Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro has hitched his wagon on the side of Cristiano Ronaldo and insisted that it should be the Portuguese who should be given the Ballon d'Or and not Luka Modric.

The Brazilian's assertion that Ronaldo was more deserving of the award is diametrically opposite to that of his club teammates, who have all more or less shown their support for Modric.

But, Casemiro is of the opinion it should be the Portuguese captain who should be given the honour as he was the best throughout last season.

Modric won the Golden Ball after some great performances at the World Cup with Croatia and was also part of the Real side that won their third consecutive Champions League title.

"Luka's year has been spectacular," he told reporters in a post-match interview, according to FourFourTwo.

"But in my opinion I would give it to Cristiano Ronaldo because he has been the best throughout last season."

Los Blancos had a comfortable 3-0 win over Roma in their first group game in the Champions League as they start their defence of the title.

Talking about that, he said, "Last year they reached the semi-finals, almost got to the final, we have to value the match we have played."

"I would say it was almost perfect, I'll keep the goal chances that we have created. We will correct [mistakes], the important thing is to create 30 goal chances."

"With Luka, Toni [Kroos] and Isco we have known each other for a long time, the quality they have is impressive, everything is easier, I know them and we feel very comfortable," he concluded.
