5 Things to Know About Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Most Expensive Goalkeeper in the World

Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed by Chelsea in a world record £71 million from Athletic Bilbao, that beat the recent record set by Liverpool when they signed Alisson Becker from Roma. Kepa will replace the outgoing Thibaut Courtois in the team and will hope to start for the team soon.

Here are five things to know about Kepa Arrizabalaga after his move to Chelsea.

5. Big money player

While the £71 million paid for Kepa seems to have come from out of the blue, it was not the first big money approach for the player. He almost joined Real Madrid just a few months ago for €20m but instead signed a seven and a half year contract with Bilbao which also set his release clause to £71m.

4. Spain international

With the number of quality goalkeepers that Spain already have, Kepa still managed to become a Spain international with one cap last year. He even went to the World Cup in Russia this summer but did not get to play in any of the games in the tournament, with the coach preferring David de Gea.

3. Local Bilbao lad

Athletic Bilbao are known to field players from the Basque region and Kepa was one such player who was inducted into the club's youth academy. He has been at the club since he was 10 years old, moving up the ranks to become the goalkeeper for the first team.

He has now repaid the club with a big money move to Chelsea, giving Bilbao some much needed cash injection.

2. Hard worker

While Kepa's talent as a goalkeeper was there to see, he did not go straight to the first team. Instead, he did all the hard work to make sure he ironed out all the kinks in his armour, playing in Bilbao's feeder club Basconia in Spain's fourth tier while also playing a few season in Bilbao's B team before he got a chance in the first team.

1. Not the full product yet

He is only 23-years-old and it is important to understand that he is not quite the finished product yet. Kepa made a few errors in games last season and also dribble his way out of a tough situation in an Under-21 game for Spain. There will be mistakes as the season progresses and Chelsea fans need to be prepared for that.
