5 Highest Points Hauls in Premier League History

It's official now. Manchester City now hold the record for most points scored in a Premier League season, and with one game to play in the season, they could well become the first team to score 100 points.

With the Premier League era now 26 years old, there have been multiple teams who have done exceptionally well in a season and accumulated an incredible number of points during their title-winning season.

Here's a look are the top five teams with the most points in a Premier League season:

5. Manchester United (1999/00) - 91 points

Manchester United were coming off the back of one of their greatest seasons, having won the treble the previous year. But that did not mean Sir Alex Ferguson would let his team relax. They went on the offensive in the 1999/00 season as well, winning 28 games and losing just three.

While it may not have been the high of the previous year, winning the league yet again and scoring 91 points would have made the team and their fans happy.

4. Chelsea (2005/06) - 91 points

In Jose Mourinho's second season in charge of Chelsea, they were dominant in the first half of the season, win 20 of their first 22 games.

In fact, the team would have had more points on the board if they hadn't faltered at the fag end of the season, dropping points having already sealed the title. They had a great chance to reach 100 points then, but they dropped the ball on that objective.

They won a total of 29 games, losing five and drawing the rest.

3. Chelsea (2016/17) - 93 points

After a disastrous season under Jose Mourinho, where they finished mid-table and dropped out of Europe, Antonio Conte brought great success to the club again, winning the title at a canter, and also setting the record for most points won in a season (which City broke this season).

It was a season where Chelsea threw away the shackles of parking the bus and went on to win 30 games, drawing only three.

The Italian's revolutionary 3-4-3 system brought about the change in fortunes of the Blues last season and was the reason they won the title comfortably.

2. Chelsea (2004/05) (95 points)

In Jose Mourinho's first season during his first spell at Chelsea, the club took the Premier League by storm, putting up 95 points on the table, a record then.

The Blues coasted to the title, securing 29 wins in the season, another record for the league, losing only one match in their entire campaign. Their defence was their strength as they conceded only 15 goals throughout the season, 11 goals less than the next best defence.

The Stamford Bridge outfit also won the League Cup that season, making it two trophies in the Portuguese tactician's first year at the club.

1. Manchester City (2017/18) (100 points)

Manchester City overtook Chelsea's record of most points in a Premier League season, having scored a century of points and are on course to reach 98 points in the 2018/19 season if they win their last game of the season against Brighton on May 12, 2019.

This record of 100 points won't be broken this season by either Liverpool or Manchester City despite their incredible seasons.
