Bengaluru FC booked their spot in the semi-finals of the Indian Super Cup with a 3-1 victory over NEROCA FC in the quarter-finals bout at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar on Friday.
Here, we take a look at three things we learned from the tie.
3. Bengaluru on the Front Foot
Considering the players Bengaluru have at their disposal, the fixture already looked like a mismatch and from the first moment, Bengaluru showed exactly why they were the favourites.
They kept possession, played between the defensive lines and kept breaking NEROCA at will. All the Bengaluru attackers looked to one up their markers, making it quite a comfortable night for the Men in Blue.
2. NEROCA's Salvation
The I-League outfit were on the ropes from the start, and were on the verge of conceding. Bengaluru finally made their dominance count in the 13th minute when Sunil Chhetri put his side ahead.
Bengaluru came charging for more, but in the 38th minute, it was NEROCA who scored against the run of the play, capitalising on Gurpreet Singh's howler. It looked like a glimmer of hope for the underdogs, but sadly, Bengaluru were just getting started.
1. Another Sunil Chhetri Show
How many times have we seen this man turn up for his team whenever things got a little cagey? Last night, we once again witnessed why Sunil Chhetri is so highly rated.
The first goal was instinctive, as he picked up the loose ball after Udanta Singh's sweet strike was parried away by the keeper. He got behind the defence and lobbed the ball over the keeper for his second goal. His third came in the injury time as his curler was cushioned into the bottom corner after being set up by Toni Dovale. The official end of NEROCA's hopes.
