Last night's Premier League action saw Manchester United go down to a shock defeat against relegation threatened Newcastle United, with Matt Richie scoring the only goal of the game midway through the second half.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be disappointed with his side's defending in the build up to the winner but the entire thing could have been avoided had defender Chris Smalling had not tried to con the referee with a dive.
Despite being near the halfway line, Smalling dived without much contact, leading to a booking and the free-kick from which the Magpies broke the deadlock. The Red Devils were unable to find an equalizer, leading to their second defeat in the last three matches.
As expected, the England defender, a much maligned figure at Old Trafford, was not spared from the wrath of fans on social media. Here, we take a look at some of the craziest reactions on Twitter to Smalling's comical dive.
Some labeled it an embarrassment:

Hundreds of millions spent & we still have,

Brings Carrick on to partner Matic.

Chris Smalling & Phil Jones really shouldn't be playing for United next season. Smalling's dive was embarassing. Jones has never developed and moved on from a promising 18-year-old. Miss Bailly terribly.— The United Stand (@UnitedStandMUFC) February 11, 2018
Smalling is an embarrassment, not fit to wear that Jersey #MUFC— Brendan Mc Loughlin (@McLoug10) February 11, 2018

As expected, some trolls went viral, including comparisons to former wrestler Ric Flair:

Smalling will not want to go to Twitter for some time:

Despite being at the club for a long time, Smalling has not developed as expected and is likely to be let go by the Mourinho in the next transfer window.
