Beckham also said that he thought that the Brazilian's display against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of Barcelona's round of 16 clash was his moment of reckoning.

Neymar scored two goals, and set up Sergi Roberto's winner, was the instant he stepped up and showed he was ready to become the best player in the world.

The Englishman, who wrote the accompaniment to Neymar's profile on Time Magazine's list of 100 most influential people in the world, said he is ready to challenge Messi and Ronaldo for the crown.

Beckham wrote, as per Fourfourtwo, "It's been clear ever since he signed for Brazilian team Santos at 17 that Neymar is an outstanding talent, a once-in-a-generation type of footballer who has fans on their feet whenever he gets the balll."

The former England captain added, "I've always been struck by his humility. He's respectful and wants to learn, which he proved when he arrived at Barcelona in 2013 to play alongside some of the game's biggest stars."

He continued, "I suspect the recent Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain, when Neymar helped his team to an unforgettable 6-1 win, will be remembered as the moment he stepped up to take on the mantle of best player in the world."

Before finishing the note, he said, "Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have a new rival to that claim - and Neymar is ready to make his move."

Though he hasn't scored as many goals as he would have liked to this season, Neymar still has contributed 15 goals and 18 assists, and has continuously taken his game to the next level.
