Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan registered a thumping 3-0 win over defending champions Bengaluru FC to close in on leaders Aizawl FC in the I-League title race.

A brace from Katsumi Yusa and a goal from Darryl Duffy helped clinch the margin for The Mariners, who moved to within a point of city rivals East Bengal, and four points off of leaders Aizawl.

Sony Norde was the most impressive player on show as the Haitian did not show any signs of jet lag, and worked relentlessly to tear apart the Bengaluru FC defence.

The first goal came from Yusa after he was played in by Norde. His shot from distance proved too much to handle for Amrinder Singh in the Bengaluru goal as he could only get a weak hand to it.

The home side's second goal came from a free-kick. The Haitian winger's delivery was perfect as he put an inviting ball right into the danger area, where striker Duffy did not make any mistake with his header.

The crowd at the Rabindra Sarovar stadium were in full flow and were treated to another masterpiece by Norde who went on a mazy run from inside his own half, held off challenges from multiple defenders, before finding the Japanese who scored the third goal.

The loss officially eliminates The Blues from the title race. Albert Roca's team selection saw captain Sunil Chhetri rested, along with midfielders Eugeneson Lyngdoh and Lenny Rodrigues. It could be that Roca wanted to focus on their AFC Cup match away in Maldives against Maziya R&C.

Bagan now sit in third spot in the table with 25 points from 13 games while Bengaluru FC have 18 points from their 14 matches.
