Defending I-League champions Bengaluru FC started their title defense on a winning note on Saturday, thrashing Shillong Lajong 3-0 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Udanta Singh was the star of the show for the hosts with his brace ensuring that Bengaluru did not have to work too hard on the night.
Speaking to the Bengaluru FC official website, former Barcelona assistant manager and current head coach of the team, Carlos Roca, expressed his happiness on the performance of the team on the night, particularly ecstatic with the way the team pressed the opposition without the ball.
Roca said, "We had control of the game throughout the 90 minutes. Lajong didn’t create too many chances and I think we created enough to score more than just the three goals. Shillong are a very good side and we knew that we couldn’t give them too much space. We pressed them well and played tough to show them that we wanted something from the game. I’m very satisfied with the performance."
Roca also reserved praise for the match-winner on the night, 21-year-old Udanta Singh, calling him the future of Indian football.
"We missed Udanta during the AFC Cup campaign as we couldn’t give him a chance to play for more than two months due to an injury. He did play the final but he was not at his best. He did well today and congratulations to him for the two goals. He’s very young, quick and he’s definitely one to look out for going ahead and I hope that he can help us this season."
Bengaluru who currently are on the top of the table will next face Chennai City in the South Indian derby at the Sree Kanteerva Stadium on 14th January.
